Painter and tapestry-maker Jeanne Rhéaume was born in Montreal in 1906 and died there in 2000. From 1934 to 1936, she attended the École des beaux-arts de Montréal and the Art Association of Montreal. Following her graduation, she exhibited her artworks in Galerie Parizeau, West End Gallery and Galerie l'Art français (now Galerie Valentin). In 1948, together with her friend Alfred Pellan, she joined the group Prisme d'Yeux and signed its manifesto written by Charles de Tonnancour. The same year, she obtained a scholarship and travelled in France, Italy, Belgium and England. Seduced by the Tuscan landscapes, she left Québec in 1952 and settled in Florence from where she kept sending back to Canada about forty artworks each year for shows in major cities. In 1970, after studying tapestry in France, Sardinia, Switzerland and Germany, she decided to settle near Siena, in the Tuscan countryside. Jeanne Rhéaume favored landscapes and still life in her paintings using mediums such as oil, watercolor, acrylic and ink, as well as in her charcoal drawings and her tapestries. Her career was punctuated with prizes, including the Third Grand Prize of Quebec, a prize for oils at the Spring Show of the Museum of Fine Arts (1950) and the Jessie Dow Prize at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (1957, 1958). She also received several weaving study grants (1969, 1970, 1971). As for her artworks, they are part of the following collections: the Art Gallery of Vancouver, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Bank, Canada Council, Global Affairs Canada (formerly Department of Foreign Affairs) in Ottawa, the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Délégation générale du Québec in Paris.
