Jean-Paul Jérôme ARC / RAC

Jean-Paul Jérôme was born in Montréal on February 19, 1928, and died on August 14, 2004. From 1945 to 1952, he studied at École des beaux-arts de Montréal where he mastered fresco techniques with Stanley Cosgrove. But starting in 1953, he gave up figurative for abstract, favouring geometric notions whose fine lines lead to an absolute plastic control. In 1955, he founded the Plastic Artists Group with Jauran (Rodolphe de Repentigny), Louis Belzile and Fernand Toupin. Their Manifesto, published in February 1955 and whose content was inspired by Cézanne and Mondrian precepts, has had a great influence on Quebec painting up to this day. During his stay in Paris, from 1956 to 1958, Jérôme interacted with Giacometti, Vasarelly and René Mortensen, with whom he shared the passion for forms and colours, and got acquainted with sculptors Gilioli, Hanshartung and Martin Barré. Back in Canada in 1958, he taught at École des beaux-arts de Montréal and at Montreal and Sorel School Boards up until 1973, after which he dedicated himself exclusively to his art. Jean-Paul Jérôme is colour, light, form. '' All my life, I have loved the purity of shape, the resonance of colour'', he liked to repeat. In 1978, he became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Jean-Paul Jérôme has had hundreds of exhibitions, both individual and collective, all across the country. His works are part of numerous public and private collections in Canada.
