Robert Chayer

Robert Chayer paints vibrant landscapes, using bold colour choices and subtle plays of light to convey the atmosphere and character of a place.

Inspired by the Fauvist movement of the early 20th century, he draws on its essential stylistic principles. Colour is applied in broad, flat areas, while simplified and textured forms suggest the landscape rather than describe it literally.

He works with intense colours to create complex and dynamic contrasts.

Through the use of atmospheric perspective, Chayer translates his vision of nature in a deeply personal way. Exact resemblance gives way to dynamism and emotion. He paints not so much what he sees, but what he feels.

Among the artists who inspire him today are Tom Thomson, Peter Doig, Kim Dorland, and Monica Tap. Yet beyond these influences, it is his walks through the forest—and the sense of wonder, even exhilaration, brought on by the changing seasons—that truly nourish his practice. For Chayer, the transition from one season to another is a chaotic and challenging transformation, one that continually fuels his creative process.
