Henri Hébert ARC / RCA

Henry Hébert was born in Montreal on April 3, 1884 and died there on May 11, 1950.  A sculptor, professor and writer, he was the son of Louis-Philippe and the brother of Adrien, both sculptors.  Educated at École des beaux-arts and École des arts décoratifs de Paris, he returned to Montreal in 1909 where he simultaneously pursued an artistic and teaching career.  Advocating modernity, he joined a group of friends to start the first art and literature avant-garde Québec magazine called ‘’Le Nigog’’.  In 1922, he became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and in 1928, he was one of the founders of the Sculptors Society of Canada. We owe him twenty or so monuments among which the best known are those of Sir Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine in Québec City and Évangeline in Montreal.
